S7E9
[13:08] <@Sylocat> Hmm, video quality problems?
[13:08] <Froborr> It’s not great, yeah.
[13:08] <Froborr> Also: joy, creeper Spike is back.
[13:08] <Whammy> Seems fine to me -shrug-
[13:08] <@Sylocat> Alright hang on lemme find a better one
[13:09] <Arrlaari> Hoity Toity and Photo Finish are returning guests
[13:09] <mere_oblivion> Spike’s even clingier than he was on Buffy
[13:09] <Froborr> What.
[13:10] <@Sylocat> (can we re-sync at end of credits?)
[13:11] <Froborr> Paused at 2:11 on the new file.
[13:11] <Whammy> I’m paused at 2:10
[13:11] <Froborr> Which is MUCH better quality.
[13:11] <Whammy> Now 2:11
[13:11] <mere_oblivion> Applejack’s my fave ’cause she’s “boring”
[13:11] <Arrlaari> Wow I wasn’t paying attention to chat at all
[13:12] <@Sylocat> Okay, caught up…
[13:12] <@Sylocat> Click
[13:12] <Arrlaari> I caught up just in time
[13:12] <@Sylocat> I get wanting an outsider opinion
[13:13] <@Sylocat> Welp, it’s a very understandable choice, but I can guess what the conflict will be…
[13:13] <mere_oblivion> App. is the “rural voter with allegedly trad values” figure in the focus group
[13:13] <Whammy> As long as she isn’t trying to Make Equestria Great Again
[13:13] <mere_oblivion> !!!
[13:14] <@Sylocat> Emphasis on “allegedly”
[13:14] <mere_oblivion> I hope they’ll invite Lewis Fine (John Goodman in True Stories)
[13:15] <mere_oblivion> I misspelled both names: s/b Louis Fyne
[13:15] <mere_oblivion> But i spelled John Goodman right
[13:15] <Whammy> da Magikz
[13:16] <@Sylocat> Ahahaha
[13:16] <Froborr> “It’s great to hear Pommel is doing so well, and not working with the Nazis to rob her investors or anything.”
[13:16] <Whammy> Always good
[13:16] <@Sylocat> Hey, that reminds me of the fashion outfits in True Stories too
[13:17] <mere_oblivion> Louis seemed a tad puzzled by them as i recall
[13:17] <@Sylocat> Is she a new character? I like her already
[13:17] <Whammy> Yeah, all three contestants are new
[13:18] <@Sylocat> I’m gonna have a hard time picking my favorite
[13:18] <@Sylocat> I’m digging the Goth Maud vibe
[13:18] <mere_oblivion> Elitists are SO predictably, well, elitist
[13:19] <mere_oblivion> Couldn’t they have explained the whole “distressed” thing to her ahead of time?
[13:19] <@Sylocat> I’m not sure they knew ahead of time what the contestants’ motifs were going to be
[13:19] <Whammy> Okay, I agree with AJ’s comment on the second one: tripping models is bad
[13:20] <@Sylocat> Huh, I’m surprised Applejack didn’t like that hairstyle, it’s got a windswept look
[13:20] <mere_oblivion> Excellent
[13:20] <@Sylocat> Pinkie knew instinctively what notes to strum for this scene
[13:20] <@Sylocat> AHAHAHAH
[13:21] <Froborr> That was AMAZING!
[13:21] <@Sylocat> Aww, I was hoping for Rarity to get a thrash metal number
[13:21] <@Sylocat> (or maybe hair metal)
[13:22] <Whammy> Now that’s just rude AJ
[13:22] <@Sylocat> Well, the others aren’t much more hesitant about interfering
[13:23] <@Sylocat> (or did Applejack set the tone on that front?)
[13:23] <Whammy> Yeah, but difference between suggesting a belt and “ripping up your hat”
[13:23] <Whammy> In which AJ turns into an Internet comment section
[13:24] <Froborr> And there it is: “I was just being honest.”
[13:24] <Froborr> No, AJ, you were just being an asshole.
[13:24] <mere_oblivion> Now that all the sexually ambivalent folk have fled, the fashion show will be . . . um, cancelled
[13:25] <@Sylocat> Of course, most people who brand themselves as “Brutally Honest” are in fact Brutally Dishonest, so AJ’s at least slightly better than most
[13:25] <mere_oblivion> Good point
[13:26] <@Sylocat> (I mean, there’s only so much difference that makes, but still)
[13:26] <Whammy> No idea what was with that moving camera shot
[13:26] <Froborr> Ahahahaha
[13:26] <@Sylocat> Uh…
[13:28] <Arrlaari> Okay I think Applejack trying to fix things by kindapping the people she alienated contradicts previous Friendship Lessons
[13:28] <Froborr> Yes, yes it does.
[13:28] <Whammy> Never let a little kidnapping get in the way of a good fashion show
[13:28] <@Sylocat> (or a good crusade, as Daniel Floyd might say)
[13:29] <Whammy> ^^reference
[13:29] <@Sylocat> Huh, they each only have one model? Is that common in the fashion industry?
[13:29] <Froborr> No, but it is how Project Runway works.
[13:30] <@Sylocat> lol Inky Rose doing the Wednesday Addams smile
[13:31] <@Sylocat> Well, that was a relatable one…
[13:32] <Froborr> Indeed.
[13:32] <Whammy> Well that was nice of it to autoplay the next one
[13:32] <Froborr> Yep. paused at the beginning of it.
[13:33] <Whammy> Anyway, episode was pretty straightforward: AJ learns not to be an ass when giving her opinion and to respect that even if you don’t quite understand it people did put a lot of work into their art and you should at least respect that much.
[13:33] <Arrlaari> paused at beginning of episode
[13:33] <Froborr> So I just somehow managed to flub taking a drink of tea in such a way that I splashed it up behind my glasses and into my eye.
[13:33] <Arrlaari> And yeah, that was a straightforward Friendship Lesson episode
[13:33] <@Sylocat> There’s also a lesson there about how Rarity assumed Applejack’s skillset would translate into other fields well
[13:34] <@Sylocat> I’ve only seen various thumbnails for the next episode, but it looks to be… interesting
[13:34] <Froborr> Also a touch of Lesson Zero: don’t assume that others share your priorities and opinions.
[13:35] <@Sylocat> Indeed, for both Rarity and AJ, in different ways. I liked the contrast there
[13:36] <Whammy> Though I do at least agree with AJ on that one dress and the issues with it dragging on the ground.
[13:36] <Whammy> And they did incorporate some of her suggestions, like Inky Rose did one outfit with a cloak
[13:36] <Whammy> But yeah, she’s probably not getting invited to another fashion show for a while XD
[13:37] <@Sylocat> Yeah, I like how some of her suggestions wound up being helpful without making her out to be better at their jobs than them
[13:37] <@Sylocat> It’s harder than it should be to strike that sort of balance
[13:38] <@Sylocat> The Internet Does Not Do Nuance, after all
[13:40] <@Sylocat> So… shall we?
[13:40] <Froborr> So we shall!
[13:40] <Whammy> Yes, let’s get on to best pony
[13:40] <Froborr> What!? Maud is in this episode!?
S7E10
[13:41] <Whammy> No, mean Starlight Glimmer ^u^”
[13:41] <Whammy> Sorry, joke
[13:41] <@Sylocat> Huh. The map’s only calling one of them?
[13:42] <@Sylocat> “Luna and Celestia would never fight… again!”
[13:42] <@Sylocat> Ohhhhhhhh boy
[13:42] <mere_oblivion> Very subtle subtext there
[13:42] <Froborr> Luna’s getting resentful again, isn’t she?
[13:42] <Whammy> Subtle as a full moon there
[13:42] <Froborr> I’m hoping that’s what it is–not a new problem, but that they’re slipping back into old patterns.
[13:43] <Whammy> Twilight is always watching
[13:43] <@Sylocat> Twilight’s certainly slipping back into old patterns
[13:43] <Whammy> To be fair “oh shit is Nightmare Moon coming back?!” is something worth getting anxious about
[13:43] <@Sylocat> Indeed
[13:44] <Whammy> Also, something about the joints on a pony make that spinning look off
[13:44] <Whammy> I too just eat a chunk of pineapple when tired
[13:45] <@Sylocat> I have a feeling Luna does realize it…
[13:46] <@Sylocat> Yikes, shades of the noble court from the Lunaverse
[13:46] <Whammy> No we’re seeing why Starlight got sent, not Twilight
[13:46] <Whammy> *Now
[13:46] <@Sylocat> *headdesks*
[13:47] <Whammy> Also, these pancakes look delicious
[13:47] <Froborr> lol
[13:47] <@Sylocat> Eww
[13:47] <Froborr> Eh, I’m more grossed out by the pineapple.
[13:48] <Froborr> Because that has pineapple in it.
[13:48] <@Sylocat> It may be just a matter of preparation
[13:48] <Whammy> -baps these two- That’s not how you apologize
[13:48] <Froborr> Nah, this is good–it’s getting stuff out in the open.
[13:48] <@Sylocat> Nicole Oliver is getting to stretch her range this season
[13:49] <@Sylocat> WAT
[13:49] <Froborr> WHAT
[13:49] <@Sylocat> And now Starlight’s slipping back into HER old patterns…
[13:49] <Froborr> She can DO that!?
[13:49] <Whammy> Old patterns for everyone!
[13:49] <mere_oblivion> A bit drastic, that
[13:49] <Whammy> I mean, she could steal cutie marks and store them so…yeah, switching seems within in her range
[13:49] <@Sylocat> And Twilight did it
[13:50] <Froborr> Starlight needed an artifact to do that, though…
[13:50] <@Sylocat> Oh, Starlight…
[13:50] <Arrlaari> The artifact was a fake IIRC
[13:50] <Whammy> Uhh, no, she didn’t. She faked the artifact as part of her mythology.
[13:50] <Froborr> Oh. Been a while since I saw that episode.
[13:50] <Whammy> -has an article onf Starlight and the noble lie discussing it
[13:50] <@Sylocat> Ahahah…
[13:50] <Froborr> Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever rewatched it.
[13:51] <Whammy> But yeah, she faked the artifact to give her a sense of legitimacy and to hide that it was her own talent/magic responsible in order to build up a mythos around her.
[13:51] <Whammy> Standard cult leader stuff
[13:51] <@Sylocat> Wait, there was an issue of the Friends Forever comic that had a premise similar to this, though it didn’t involve Cutie Mark switching
[13:52] <Whammy> Glad to see Foal Free Press still in business
[13:52] <@Sylocat> Indeed
[13:52] <Whammy> And apparently gets circulated as a major paper in Canterlot
[13:52] <Whammy> Though they need to get a better photographer. You’re supposed to take more than one picture for a reason.
[13:53] <@Sylocat> Or they did take multiple photos and the paper picked that one on purpose…
[13:53] <mere_oblivion> Probably
[13:54] <Whammy> Someone needs to talk with Featherweight abotu ethics then
[13:54] <Froborr> It’s bugging me more than it should that this isn’t a fair test–Celestia gets to do it well-rested, while Luna was already exhausted at the start.
[13:55] <@Sylocat> Of course, Celestia’s about to encounter trouble even with that unfair advantage, so…
[13:55] <Froborr> Yeah, hence the “more than it should”
[13:55] <Froborr> YES
[13:55] <@Sylocat> …Whoa
[13:56] <Froborr> Oooh, Daybreaker. That’s a MUCH better name than Corona.
[13:56] <Froborr> I was always dissatisfied with Corona, but never managed to come up with anything better.
[13:56] <mere_oblivion> But no one would ever call a beer Daybreaker (or would they?)
[13:57] <@Sylocat> Someone’s probably done that
[13:57] <@Sylocat> I mean, I’ve seen beers called “Moose Drool” and “Bear Whizz”
[13:57] <mere_oblivion> The beer for the hungover binge-watcher
[13:57] <@Sylocat> Awww
[13:58] <Whammy> …it bugs me that doesn’t rhyme
[13:58] <Froborr> Daybreaker sounds more like a cocktail. Corona and OJ.
[13:58] <Froborr> (Is that as disgusting as I think it is?)
[13:58] <@Sylocat> Huh… an actual thematic reason for a dream of teeth falling out?
[13:58] <@Sylocat> (I’ve never actually had the teeth-falling-out dream, though I’ve definitely had the no-pants-in-public one)
[13:58] <mere_oblivion> Pretty darn disgusting, yes
[13:59] <@Sylocat> Wow
[13:59] <Whammy> Yeah, an extrovert having to do a job all alone versus an introvert doing social activities.
[14:00] <Whammy> And Celestia’s usual hands off style not great when basically being a therapist for ponies.
[14:00] <@Sylocat> “Of course it is in your head, Harry, but why should that mean it is not real?”
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Ahahah, nice thematic throughline with the last episode
[14:01] <mere_oblivion> I’ll say!
[14:02] <@Sylocat> “Messing up” is an understatement of what she came dangerously close to doing…
[14:02] <Whammy> Bye Starlight…
[14:02] <@Sylocat> Wow.
[14:02] <Froborr> That was a fun one!
[14:02] <mere_oblivion> ‘deed
[14:03] <Whammy> Definitely one of the good episodes of the season
[14:03] <@Sylocat> That may have tied with Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep for my favorite episode
[14:05] <Arrlaari> The premise was a good way to get action on screen without pushing a real fight into Equestria
[14:06] <mere_oblivion> Excellent point.
[14:06] <Froborr> I mean, the plot’s old enough to have an Arne-Thompson-Uther number, but they executed it well.
[14:06] <Arrlaari> I also note an example of Cartoons are not allowed to name Death, while also not being required to actually hide it
[14:06] <Arrlaari> (This happened all the time in the recent Voltron remake)
[14:07] <@Sylocat> I keep meaning to watch that
[14:07] <Whammy> Also good for the two of them get issues aired out.
[14:07] <@Sylocat> Indeed… these two in particular
[14:07] <Whammy> And just good to have Celestia and Luna episodes in general
[14:08] <@Sylocat> Yeah… Best Princess is finally getting some time to shine (lol) this season
[14:08] <@Sylocat> Welp, I must be off… bye all, this was a pretty darn good pair of eps!
[14:09] <mere_oblivion> Toy Story 3 pushed the “talk about death w/o naming it” thing to the limit
[14:09] <Froborr> Later Sylo!
[14:09] == Sylocat [2f299635@gateway/web/freenode/ip.47.41.150.53] has quit [Quit: Page closed]
[14:09] <mere_oblivion> Ciao all. Good day on the MLP front
[14:09] <Froborr> Later mere!
[14:09] <Whammy> Guess we’re all heading out then
[14:10] <Froborr> Arr–I missed where it showed up in this episode?
[14:10] <Arrlaari> Daybreaker asserts that banishing Nightmare Moon was a mistake, that she should have “destroyed you”
[14:11] <Froborr> Ah, yes.
[14:11] <Froborr> That’s a common one.
[14:11] <Arrlaari> Voltron uses it all the time
[14:11] <Whammy> But, can definitely say that Starlight was a good choice. Her rather blunt manner and willingness to kind of shrug off the sisters’ status.
[14:12] <Whammy> Compared to Twilight who’d probably just tip-toe around the issue and go into a panic attack…though I guess that could be a good way to do a lesson on sometimes you do need to confront an issue head on….
[14:12] <Arrlaari> That show is literally about a war, opponents die all the time and are unambiguously trying to kill the main cast. One caracter has a computer ghost of their father on-hand. They never, ever, name death.
[14:12] <Froborr> Yeah, Starlight was great for this.
[14:13] <Arrlaari> I think it works because the Senior Princesses have status and power
[14:13] <Froborr> That’s hilarious–has to be a deliberate reference to how anime adaptations used to do that really blatantly.
[14:15] == mere_oblivion [2f299635@gateway/web/freenode/ip.47.41.150.53] has quit [Quit: Page closed]
[14:15] <Arrlaari> Starlight got into a lot of trouble being forcefull with ordinary, everyday ponies. But that same tendency, when pitted against the enormous expectation of deference to The Princesses, is necessary to address a problem.
[14:16] <Froborr> Yep. It’s a great choice.
[14:17] <Whammy> And Nightmare!Celestia aka Daybreaker was neat, though I think there was some controversy on it.
[14:17] <Whammy> Some claim they stole it from a fanartist, but I never looked into it
[14:18] <Froborr> She does look a LOT like Corona. But that’s kind of the obvious way to go with evil Celestia?
[14:18] <Whammy> No, I meant there was a claim about a comic two months before the episode that had exact character design and name used.
[14:18] <Froborr> (Same motivation as Corona, too–pride, as opposed to jealousy–but again, obvious way to go with Celestia.)
[14:18] <Froborr> Oh.
[14:18] <Froborr> Well,  that seems very unlikely–two months isn’t long enough lead time for animation.
[14:19] <Whammy> Yeah, that was why I didn’t look into it
[14:19] <Arrlaari> And the ideas follow clearly enough from prior material that independent discovery is plausible
[14:19] <Froborr> Exactly.
[14:20] <Arrlaari> Celestia’s actress was clearly having a blast as Daybreaker
[14:20] <Froborr> Yeah, that was great.
[14:23] <Whammy> -was looking up that thing on stolen art, see’s people trying to name R63 of Daybreaker-
[14:23] <Whammy> Why do people feel the need to change the name just cause of that =P
[14:23] <Froborr> Which is R63 again? Gender-swap?
[14:25] <Whammy> Yeah
[14:27] <Whammy> Also don’t know how Butterscotch is an alternate for Fluttershy so -shrug-
[14:29] <Froborr> That’s weird.
[14:29] <Whammy> AJ’s the main exception I’ve seen
