Episode 17

[14:07] <Sylocat> Huh, I’d have assumed they’d pick up right where they left off
[14:08] <Sylocat> Have we seen her with the dark hair before?
01[14:08] <Froborr> I don’t think so.
01[14:08] <Froborr> And by the way she dresses,  I think she’s an Inspector.
[14:09] <Sylocat> Good point…
01[14:10] <Froborr> Interesting how prominent Makishima still is in this op.
[14:10] <mere_oblivion> ads
[14:10] <Sylocat> Paused at end of OP
[14:10] <Sylocat> Yeah, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Makishima
[14:11] <Sylocat> I wonder if he’s going to pull a Hannibal and try to get them to team up with him to take down whatever Conspiracy was uncovered last ep
[14:11] <mere_oblivion> Was that ad in German?
[14:12] <Sylocat> I dunno, was it? Ads are different for everyone
[14:12] <mere_oblivion> Back
[14:12] <Arrlaari> I expect that he will vanish into the conspiracy, if we see any more of him, it will be his experience of imprisonment
[14:12] <Arrlaari> It would be a fitting vehicle in which to reveal to us more information about Sybil
[14:13] <Arrlaari> There may also be flashbacks to when he was The Profiler’s student
[14:13] <Sylocat> Good point…
[14:13] <Arrlaari> They hinted that but haven’t explicitly stated it yet
[14:13] <Sylocat> Are we all paused at end of ads?
[14:13] <Arrlaari> paused after ads
[14:13] <mere_oblivion> Yes
[14:13] <Sylocat> Okay…
[14:13] <Sylocat> Click
[14:13] <Sylocat> “I see you managed to get your shirt off”
[14:13] <mere_oblivion> Hah!
[14:16] <Sylocat> That’s a clever meta-joke on the premise
[14:17] <Sylocat> Well, that’s remarkably up-front about their plans for Makishima
[14:18] <Sylocat> …Isn’t Kagari being dead kind of an obvious answer even if they don’t know the specifics?
[14:18] <mere_oblivion> You’d think
01[14:18] <Froborr> Preusmably they looked in the basement and didn’t find a body?
[14:18] <Arrlaari> The parts of the basement that they are allowed to know exists
[14:18] <Arrlaari> ad
[14:18] <mere_oblivion> ads
[14:18] <Sylocat> Paused at 7:43
[14:19] <Arrlaari> Every level beneath -4 is off records, so all 4 goons, Choe, and Kagari will not be found
[14:20] <Arrlaari> The passage Kagari found will have been closed up again by The Chief
[14:20] <mere_oblivion> Back at 7:43
[14:20] <Arrlaari> Paused after ads.
[14:20] <Sylocat> Okay…
[14:20] <Sylocat> Click
[14:20] <Arrlaari> Hello, new specimen
[14:21] <Sylocat> Ah, so they do have a history
[14:21] <Sylocat> And of course they bond over literature
01[14:21] <Froborr> So, the Chief is the Profiler.
[14:21] <Sylocat> …Well
[14:22] <Sylocat> We already saw she was an android
[14:22] <Sylocat> Has this been foreshadowed at all? It seems kind of a big thing to spring in the last 5 episodes
01[14:23] <Froborr> Called it.
[14:23] <mere_oblivion> Ads again already
[14:23] <Sylocat> Paused at 10:18
[14:23] <Arrlaari> The only hint was when Choe and Kagari saw Sybil’ “true form”
[14:23] <Arrlaari> We weren’t allowed to see it but Choe felt certain the scandal would take down the government
[14:23] <Arrlaari> ad as well
[14:24] <Arrlaari> But yeah, Froborr guessed this a long time ago
[14:24] <mere_oblivion> Back at 10:18
01[14:24] <Froborr> And y’all rejected it as too obvious.
[14:24] <mere_oblivion> Sigh.
01[14:24] <Froborr> So lack of foreshadowing was clearly not a problem.
[14:24] <Sylocat> So Sibyl is a bunch of humans manually interpreting the cymatic scan results?
01[14:24] <Froborr> Nah, wetware computer built out of criminal brains.
[14:25] <Sylocat> I meant foreshadowing for the brains-swapped-between-bodies part of it
[14:25] <Arrlaari> There’s only one body, the putative chief
[14:26] <Arrlaari> Paused after ads. The brains are probably computer assisted but still necessary to make the judgements.
[14:26] <Sylocat> Okay…
[14:26] <Sylocat> Click
[14:27] <Sylocat> Finally, someone suggested the obvious
[14:28] <Sylocat> This was the Wachowski Sisters’ original idea for The Matrix
[14:30] <Sylocat> That’s a pretty darn good requirement
[14:31] <Sylocat> So Makishima’s political beliefs shaped his physiology and turned him criminally asymptomatic?
01[14:32] <Froborr> I think the implication is that they share a common source?
[14:33] <Sylocat> …If they think he’ll agree to this, they really are unequipped to scan him
01[14:33] <Froborr> I’m surprised they’re giving him a choice, tbh.
[14:33] <Sylocat> He has diverse tastes in classic literature
01[14:35] <Froborr> They presumed he would share their political views based on his physiology and the resulting experiences.
[14:36] <Arrlaari> Well, I was wrong about Makishima not escaping from Sybil
[14:37] <Arrlaari> post credits scene
[14:37] <Sylocat> WHOA
[14:38] <Sylocat> Oh, it was a dream
[14:38] <Sylocat> Dang, that’s kind of a pivotal thing to put post-credits
[14:38] <Sylocat> Maybe it’ll also be the opening of the next episode
[14:39] <Sylocat> Hmm… you know, I showed dad Ex Machina the other night, and the chief’s monologue kind of reminds me of something in there
[14:40] <Arrlaari> preloaded next episode
[14:40] <Sylocat> Specifically, how the Turing Test is presented in that movie
[14:41] <Sylocat> It’s said that an AI passes the test if it exhibits behavior indistinguishable from a human… but that test relies entirely on the human testers’ notions of what human behavior encompasses, and, as Ex Machina shows us, human beings can have pretty narrow ideas of how other humans behave
[14:41] <mere_oblivion> You mean, the chief should’ve been able to predict that Makishima wouldn’t become part of the System?
[14:41] <Sylocat> Well, that too
[14:41] <Sylocat> It ties into that
[14:41] <mere_oblivion> More like, it makes sense that she couldn’t?
[14:42] <Sylocat> Yeah
[14:42] <Arrlaari> The Chief’s error was in waking him too soon, and failing to expect that he would attack her to escape
[14:42] <Arrlaari> She was prepared to force him if he said no. She was not prepared to lose a fight.
[14:42] <Arrlaari> Or he, if one uses his original pronoun
[14:43] <Sylocat> It was a step in the right direction that they chose “weird” people for Sibyl, but even that could only produce a limited model of human behavior, allowing Makishima to slip through
[14:43] <mere_oblivion> Ah-hah
[14:44] <Arrlaari> Or it may be that Sybil is perfectly capable of judging Makishima – they simply refused to classify him as a target in order to preserve him for recruitment
[14:45] <Sylocat> Huh, that’s another possibility
[14:45] <mere_oblivion> It is kind of hard to believe Sybil could have survived this long while being that flawed
[14:46] <Arrlaari> Did anyone catch the title of the book given to Makishima?
[14:46] <mere_oblivion> I didn’t, and i was looking for it
01[14:46] <Froborr> I didn’t–I’d assumed it was Gulliver’s Travels.
[14:46] <Sylocat> Same here
[14:47] <Sylocat> He had to explain what Gulliver’s Travels was, though
[14:47] <Arrlaari> They reacted to Makishima’s citation as if they weren’t familiar with the book
[14:47] <Sylocat> (or at least, that part of it)
[14:47] <Arrlaari> One must assume that they actually read the book Makishima lent them. It would have been very rude not to.
[14:47] <Sylocat> Well yeah, especially if they thought he was special
[14:48] <Arrlaari> Perhaps Kogami will find that book somehow and we’ll learn which it was, then.
[14:48] <Sylocat> (though it occurs to me that if Sybil really could track and judge Makishima, they probably would have made a move to recruit him long before now)
[14:50] <Sylocat> Anyway, shall we go on?
[14:50] <Arrlaari> “Makishima can’t be judged by Sybil because he is criminally asymptomatic” works as a story. “Makishima reads as a target for enforcement but not elimination despite comitting murders because he’s criminally asympomatic” may be a bridge too far

Episode 18

[14:51] <Arrlaari> And it may simply be a matter of emotionally identifying with Makishima, while not so identifying with “ordinary” people
[14:52] <Sylocat> Good point
[14:52] <Sylocat> I wonder how many of those bodies the chief has on standby
[14:52] <mere_oblivion> She made a dern good recovery. (Though it’s likely not “really” here, I guess.)
[14:52] <mere_oblivion> really *her*
[14:53] <Arrlaari> That logo briefly visible in the credits – “The Chief” was briefly framed by it earlier
[14:53] <Arrlaari> It’s like the two faces/vase shillouette, but instead it’s a pillar / top view of a brain
[14:53] <mere_oblivion> Ads after opening creds
[14:53] <Sylocat> Huh, good catch
[14:54] <Arrlaari> ads
[14:54] <Sylocat> Paused at 2:28
[14:55] <mere_oblivion> Ready at 2:28
[14:57] <Arrlaari> paused after ads
[14:57] <mere_oblivion> Are we ready to resume?
[14:57] <Sylocat> Okay…
[14:57] <Sylocat> Click
[14:58] <Sylocat> That’s a risky move by the Chief, planting the idea that someone helped him
[14:58] <mere_oblivion> ” *When* you capture him next time”?
01[14:58] <Froborr> Interesting. He knows the truth–why are they prioritizing bringing him in alive?
[14:59] <Arrlaari> Because they don’t know how much their previous representative told him while disconnected
01[14:59] <Froborr> Ohh, good point.
[14:59] <mere_oblivion> Indeed
[15:00] <Sylocat> He told them about the call?
[15:00] <mere_oblivion> Why not?
[15:00] <Sylocat> He’s risking that getting back to the Chief
[15:01] <mere_oblivion> True
01[15:01] <Froborr> MEANINGFUL CHAMELEON
[15:04] <mere_oblivion> Why does Kogami assume he’d be able to kill M. (Technically able, i mean.)
[15:05] <Sylocat> I doubt Kogami is the type of person to let questions like that bug him
[15:05] <mere_oblivion> He really isn’t, is he?
[15:05] <Sylocat> …I think this metaphor got away from him midway through
[15:06] <mere_oblivion> The ball or the dog?
[15:06] <mere_oblivion> ads
[15:07] <Arrlaari> ad
[15:07] <Sylocat> Paused at 11:25
[15:07] <Sylocat> Ginoza doesn’t realize he doesn’t need an excuse, Kogami’s already going vigilante
[15:08] <Arrlaari> He can’t leave the building unauthorized
[15:08] <mere_oblivion> Ready at 11:25
[15:08] <Sylocat> Ah, I’d forgotten that part
[15:09] <Arrlaari> paused after ad
[15:09] <Sylocat> Okay…
[15:09] <Sylocat> Click
[15:10] <Sylocat> Ah, it’s her again, from the opening of the last episode
[15:11] <Arrlaari> Kougami’s ability to figure out what Makishima is doing is necessarily also an ability to figure out what Sybil is doing
[15:11] <Sylocat> And he knows it
[15:13] <Sylocat> …The chief is really being sloppy with letting their secrets slip out today
[15:13] <mere_oblivion> Ads a-stinking-gain
[15:14] <Arrlaari> ad
[15:14] <Sylocat> Paused at 15:59
[15:14] <Arrlaari> It seems Sybil members overestimate themselves when separated from the system
[15:15] <Sylocat> I loved Akane’s dry delivery of that line
[15:16] <mere_oblivion> Yes!
[15:16] <Arrlaari> paused after ad.
[15:16] <mere_oblivion> Me too
[15:17] <Sylocat> Okay…
[15:17] <Sylocat> Click
[15:18] <Sylocat> Makishima would probably like the idea of being taken down with his own invention
[15:19] <Sylocat> …What.
[15:19] <Sylocat> That was a weird line
[15:19] <mere_oblivion> Kind of outa the blue
01[15:19] <Froborr> It was a goodbye. At least, that’s how I parsed it.
[15:20] <Sylocat> “Why are you obsessed with Makishima?” You want it alphabetically?
[15:21] <mere_oblivion> Can we assume a post-credits scene is on the way?
01[15:21] <Froborr> Given the amount of time left in the video, yeah.
[15:22] <Sylocat> Betrayed her? She was probably among those rooting for him to escape
[15:23] <mere_oblivion> But she didn’t want him to become another killer
[15:28] <mere_oblivion> Anyone?
[15:28] <Sylocat> Heh.
[15:29] <mere_oblivion> “The Hawley-Smoot Tariff, which . . . helped or harmed . . . that’s right, harmed the economy . .  .”
[15:29] <Sylocat> This was a pretty good “breather” episode
[15:29] <mere_oblivion> Excellent point. Mostly talkin’, which felt refreshing.
[15:32] <mere_oblivion> Are we still talkin’ here, by the way?
[15:32] <Sylocat> Thinkin’
01[15:32] <Froborr> Nobody seems to have much to say.
[15:34] <Arrlaari> Hm
[15:35] <Arrlaari> I wonder if Makishima kept that damaged phone
01[15:35] <Froborr> Can’t imagine he would, too easy to track.
[15:36] <Arrlaari> It was Choe’s phone, Choe wouldn’t have carried it if it were an infosec reisk
[15:36] <Sylocat> Yeah, but who knows what the Chief did to it while he was unconscious
01[15:36] <Froborr> Point.
01[15:36] <Froborr> Also a good point.
[15:39] <Arrlaari> At this point we may as well name her Sybil
[15:39] <Sylocat> Seconded.
[15:41] <mere_oblivion> It is a much more evocative name, after all
