Episode 9

[14:17] <Sylocat> We had last left off ending that three-part mystery at the school, right?
[14:17] <Sylocat> Ah, so they’re still looking into it!
[14:17] <Sylocat> Ooh, they got that tape
01[14:18] <Froborr> Yeah, where we last left off white haired guys friend killed the “artist”
[14:18] <Arrlaari> The fragment of the tape was revealed at the end of last episode
[14:19] <Arrlaari> Which Kogami guessed at just now – “disappear” is a common euphemism for “killed”
[14:20] <Sylocat> Those clothes are like appearance generators
01[14:20] <Froborr> Man, I do love the domestic tech in this show.
[14:20] <Sylocat> Yeah, those would be so handy
[14:20] <Sylocat> “Speculation circuit will be reset.” I love it
[14:21] <mere_oblivion> “Speculation circuit”!!
[14:21] <mere_oblivion> SOunds like something Joel would adjust on the ‘bots
01[14:21] <Froborr> Okay, this has been bugging me since I started Voyager: why would a hologram have circuits?
[14:21] <Sylocat> …Well, this guy is not at all totally creepy…
[14:21] <Sylocat> Maybe the circuits are in the projector-control thingy?
[14:21] <Arrlaari> I believe this is the guy Makishima is currently assisting, the one who shot the previous killer
[14:22] <Sylocat> Oh? I didn’t recognize him without the hat
[14:22] <Arrlaari> I speculate the fact that he is a cyborg allows him to defeat Sybil’s mood monitoring
[14:22] <Sylocat> Is she holding a Sonic Screwdriver?
01[14:23] <Froborr> I think it’s a combination microphone/stylus, that’s pretty neat!
[14:25] <Sylocat> Of course, outsourced memories aren’t really all that new, they’re just more convenient nowadays
[14:25] <Arrlaari> They draw his eyes realistically, which contrasts with the anime stylized eyes everyone else has
[14:25] <mere_oblivion> Very true–no wonder he looks so strange!
[14:25] <Sylocat> Is that why I got the uncanny-valley vibe from him?
[14:25] <mere_oblivion> I did too
[14:26] <Arrlaari> They are also drawing his teeth, which other characters’ teeth are hidden
[14:26] <Sylocat> So, are these going to turn out to be holo-trees, or is this guy supposed to be the luddite-hipster sort?
[14:27] <Arrlaari> Ah, a Sherlock
01[14:27] <Froborr> With a bit of cold reading mixed in, yeah.
[14:27] <Sylocat> Ah, like Alex Delaware
[14:29] <Sylocat> Heh. I like the little jab there
[14:29] <Sylocat> “The trait of a hero or ruler”
[14:30] <Sylocat> Is it really that surprising that he used identity theft? I mean, in the age of Sibyl, wouldn’t crafting a brand-new identity be basically impossible?
[14:32] <mere_oblivion> This is why I’m not that into True Crime–when people say “Don’t you want to get inside the mind of a criminal?” I say “No thanks, my own mind is plenty messed-up already.”
01[14:32] <Froborr> I wonder what special circumstances they issue huntinglicenses under
01[14:32] <Froborr> Oh, that’s disgusting.
[14:32] <Sylocat> …Wow
[14:33] <Arrlaari> The robot dogs might be cyborg dogs, rather than pure robots
[14:33] <mere_oblivion> The pipe-smokin’ version of Hannibal L.
[14:33] <Sylocat> No wonder Makishima likes this guy
01[14:34] <Froborr> “If Makishima is a living man”
01[14:34] <Froborr> Have we ever seen Makishima outdoors, or anywhere where there isn’t holographic equipment?
[14:34] <Sylocat> That’s… a good question
[14:35] <Sylocat> Ooh, is Makishima going to turn out to be a split-personality of the Enforcer dude given life by the network?
[14:35] <mere_oblivion> They’re of equal rank?!
[14:35] <Sylocat> GO AKANE
[14:35] <Sylocat> Dang, he looked really shook up
01[14:38] <Froborr> Oh wow, that went by fast.
[14:38] <Sylocat> Wow!
[14:38] <Sylocat> That was quick indeed
[14:40] <mere_oblivion> Same here–thought it was a shorter-than-usual episode, but evidently not so
[14:40] <Sylocat> Time flies when you’re having fun, I guess
01[14:41] <Froborr> Crack theory on Makishima: he’s a projection by the Sibyl System itself.
01[14:41] <Froborr> Still working out exactly why, but I’m thinking it has something to do with flushing out people who would otherwise slip through the cracks of the mental health detection dealy.
[14:41] <Arrlaari> I’m confident Makishima is a human
[14:41] <Arrlaari> And we have seen him in the old sewers, which likely don’t have environment holo
[14:42] <Sylocat> You never know what has evironment holo around here, but good point
[14:42] <Arrlaari> So I doubt that the real person is hiding behind a holographic avatar
[14:42] <Sylocat> He could be an android
[14:42] <Sylocat> But I guess we’ll see
01[14:42] <Froborr> Did we? OK, scratch that theory.
[14:43] <Arrlaari> The tech guy, who has a Korean name, was hanging out with Makishima in one part of the sewers while she was wandering into the part that had been set up for a hunt
[14:44] <Sylocat> You have a really, really good memory, Arrlaari
[14:44] <mere_oblivion> I’ll say–kinda comes in handy with a series as deep as this one!
[14:44] <Arrlaari> I note with some dissatisfaction that the Korean accomplice is consistently drawn with squinty eyes
[14:45] <Sylocat> …Huh. Is that still a thing in Japan?
01[14:46] <Froborr> I know anti-Korean racism is pretty bad there.
[14:46] <Arrlaari> The older enforcer seems to me to be the right age to have known Ginoza’s father personally
[14:46] <Sylocat> Well yeah, but I mean, using that visual signifier
[14:47] <Arrlaari> Japan absolutely refuses to naturalize immigrants or their children, and there’s a substantial Korean-Japanese population dating back to between WW1 and WW2
[14:48] <mere_oblivion> Sadaharu Oh’s memoir is well worth reading–the Japanese had a terrible time accepting that he was the #1 home-run hitter of all time ’cause he’s half-Chinese (as his name suggests)
[14:48] <Arrlaari> There’s a small refugee enclave from even earlier, from some part of the old Ottoman empire, who look racially white and typically fill what few roles there are for white actors in Japanese live acting. Not citizens.
[14:49] <Arrlaari> From what I can tell most Japanese citizens aren’t aware that enclave exists
[14:50] <Arrlaari> Also notable: Some effort has been made to counteract demographic aging through immigration – but only of descendents of Japanese emigrants
[14:52] <Arrlaari> I’ve read some articles about Brazilian-Japanese who were induced to immigrate to Japan, and the gap in what native Japanese expected of them (basically: Japanese people who might also know Portugeuse) and what they were (Brazilians).
[14:53] <Sylocat> …Huh.
[14:55] <Sylocat> Remind me to ask you for a link to those articles
[14:55] <Arrlaari> Note also: Japanese birth & marriage records are comprehensive and go back before industrialization, in contrast to the U.S. where many children of the poor do not have birth certificates
[14:56] <Arrlaari> It is routine for employeers to review one’s family record and therefore impossible to conceal non-citizenship when seeking a job
[14:58] <Sylocat> That sounds slightly dystopian in itself

Episode 10

[15:01] <Arrlaari> Speculation: Makishima expects the hunter to lose
[15:01] <Sylocat> Who was that from? I missed the name
01[15:01] <Froborr> Juri, I think?
[15:01] <Arrlaari> I think “Yuki”
01[15:01] <Froborr> But I don’t know who that is.
01[15:01] <Froborr> Might’ve been Yuki.
01[15:01] <Froborr> Still don’t know who that is.
[15:01] <Arrlaari> My best guess is one of the two enforcer women
[15:02] <Arrlaari> second guess is one of her friends outside the agency, but in that case the message is a forgery
01[15:02] <Froborr> It is one of her friends.
[15:02] <Sylocat> Ah, looks like
[15:03] <Arrlaari> A forgery, or hostage’s dictated message
[15:03] <mere_oblivion> How likely is it that Gino won’t find out?
[15:04] <Arrlaari> His tech is going to get shut down, this is the hunting field
[15:05] <Sylocat> So, did the hunter send it to her because he knew she would get Kogami involved?
[15:05] <Arrlaari> Oh, they’re faking her voice now
[15:06] <mere_oblivion> Thought so too
[15:06] <Sylocat> Makishima clearly has SOME kind of in with the system
[15:06] <Sylocat> Ewwwwww
01[15:06] <Froborr> Agreed: ew.
[15:07] <Sylocat> I guess Makishima REALLY wants them to have the playing field all to themselves
[15:09] <Sylocat> Gee, I guess so
[15:11] <Sylocat> So, is this how Makishima keeps his crime coefficient down, by maintaining a hands-off approach?
[15:12] <Sylocat> I have a sneaking suspicion that the robo-dogs are going to eat and/or rearrange the flare trail
[15:13] <mere_oblivion> Does anyone else think Makishima is incredibly lazy?
[15:14] <Sylocat> So they have a fetch quest
[15:15] <Sylocat> MISSION UPDATE: Find battery and antenna to reassemble transponder
01[15:15] <Froborr> Nice.
[15:15] <Sylocat> So did the taser affect the robodog or no?
[15:17] <Sylocat> So, the schoolgirl killer’s final prediction (about “Makishima will turn against you too”) came true even quicker than I’d anticipated
[15:18] <mere_oblivion> Damn, she’s clever
[15:18] <Sylocat> The damsel in distress calls out the damsel in distress formula
[15:19] <Sylocat> AHAHAHAH
01[15:19] <Froborr> She’s got the antenna, right?
[15:19] <Sylocat> JUST TELL HER SHE’S GOT THE ANTENNA
[15:20] <Sylocat> Ouch
01[15:20] <Froborr> I was going to complain that that plot point makes no sense, but if clothes can ahve their colors changed whenever you want it’s much more plausible that her underwear would be coordinated.
[15:21] <Sylocat> They’d probably have to dress her in non-electronic clothes specifically to prevent her putting something more sensible on for the chase sequence
01[15:21] <Froborr> (Bras are MUCH more expensive than panties, so most women wear the same bra multiple times before washing it, meaning that the odds of someone’s underwear being coordinated on a random day that they weren’t expecting it to be seen are quite low.)
[15:22] <Sylocat> Oh, a mid-credits scene
[15:22] <Sylocat> …Or not
[15:22] <mere_oblivion> MUST we stop here?
[15:23] <Sylocat> …Well
01[15:23] <Froborr> I must, I’m afraid.
[15:23] <Sylocat> So must we, as we have performance tonight
[15:27] <Arrlaari> My Nvidia driver update has made no progress through either of those episodes, so I have to try it again in safe mode
[15:27] <Sylocat> Ouch
[15:29] <Arrlaari> So, Makishima arranged the hunt to test whether Kougami would abandon the hostage, and rewarded him for not doing so
[15:30] <Arrlaari> I believe that supports Kougami’s implied theory that Makishima is a former detective who was educated by the professor he brought Akane to see.
[15:34] <mere_oblivion> SOunds plausible to me . . .
[15:37] <Arrlaari> I expect that Ginzo’s father will be tied up in the Makishima case as well. I think he’s dead – if he were alive he’d be an enforcer but it’d be too much the old guy to be talking about himself in the third person
01[15:39] <Froborr> Yeah, probably. I’m still curious whether that opening scene of the first episode was flashback or flashforward…
[15:39] <mere_oblivion> Indeed, Ginzo’s father–one of today’s many new twists
[15:40] <mere_oblivion> I’ve been assuming flash-forward, Froborr, who the h. knows anymore??
[15:40] <Arrlaari> The Beareau Chief discussed Ginzo’s father with him in an earlier episode
[15:41] <mere_oblivion> Hmm. I missed that or didn’t catch the significance
[15:41] <Arrlaari> I still believe it was a flash forward – in the previous episode Makishima reacted to Kougami as if he were an unfamiliar person, not someone he knew from an earlier time
[15:42] <Arrlaari> The conversation was mostly about Akane, the Chief basically said that Ginzo doesn’t want her to end up like Ginzo’s father
[15:42] <Arrlaari> Which basically told us that what happened to Ginzo’s father was what they were worried about happening to Akane, which from the rest of the conversation is clearly what happened to Kougami
[15:43] <mere_oblivion> Ah-hah. Thanks for refreshing my memory.
