Episode 5

[14:00] <Sylocat> Ah yes, we’d left off with the Summer Wars subplot
01[14:01] <Froborr> Sounds like she said “spookey boogie zanarkie” which is hilarious.
[14:01] <Arrlaari> That’s pretty much how she pronounced it
01[14:02] <Froborr> …I have absolutely no idea why I spelled it so bizarrely, though.
[14:02] <Sylocat> I love katakana
[14:03] <Sylocat> Was Talisman an organization or a person? I think it was a person
01[14:03] <Froborr> IIRC it was a person, but they were murdered and yet their online persona is still going.
[14:03] <Sylocat> Ah, right
[14:05] <Sylocat> Was there a reference to different works of classic literature in each episode? I seem to remember that being a thing
01[14:06] <Froborr> Hmm, I rewatched the first three episodes this morning and I don’t remember that…
01[14:06] <Froborr> But I wasn’t being super-attentive.
[14:07] <Sylocat> I probably should have re-watched them too
01[14:07] <Froborr> Ooh, IDing someone through linguistic patterns.
01[14:07] <Froborr> I dunno why, but I really like that conceit.
[14:08] <Sylocat> Especially online, since it’s one of the few ways you can try and guess who someone is
01[14:10] <Froborr> I think it’s probably because my first encounter with the idea was ANTONIO SMITH, FORENSIC LINGUIST
[14:11] <Sylocat> “Melancholia?” It looks like a Mega Man knockoff
[14:13] <Sylocat> It occurs to me that “Spooky Boogie” isn’t an off-rhyme in katakana, it really does use the same vowel sound
01[14:14] <Froborr> True.
01[14:14] <Froborr> Supuki Bugi.
[14:14] <Arrlaari> Also, the rhyme is a k-g change, and those are related consonants in kana
[14:15] <Sylocat> The only difference between the k and g consonants, IIRC, is that the g consonents have a little accent over them
01[14:15] <Froborr> This guy’s kinda awesome and WTF is the detective doing?
01[14:16] <Froborr> Oh, shorting out the holography.
[14:17] <Sylocat> Oh, this is extra cruel
[14:19] <Sylocat> In most stories it would just be his own subconscious doing that horrorshow thingy
01[14:20] <Froborr> Yeah.
[14:20] <Arrlaari> Gee, maybe y’all shoulda taken him for questioning
[14:20] <Sylocat> They probably wouldn’t have gotten much out of him in the condition he was in, but yeah, it would have been worth a shot anyway
01[14:20] <Froborr> I was thinking the same thing–it seems like a glaring flaw in the Dominators that they FORCE you to kill instead of ALLOWING it when the situation warrants.
01[14:22] <Froborr> Wait, did we  not already know he was a former Inspector?
[14:22] <Sylocat> Maybe they think it’d mesh better with Sibyl’s PR campaign if they took the kill-or-don’t-kill decision out of human hands?
01[14:23] <Froborr> Also I just realized, the mysterious backer dude, with the white hair? He was in the opening scene of the first episode.
01[14:23] <Froborr> It was a flashback or flashforward to a face-off between him and whatsisface, the Enforcer that’s prominent in the credits.
[14:23] <Arrlaari> I believe it was strongly hinted before this episode explicitly states the fact
[14:24] <Sylocat> Yeah, I remember that now… it was that really stylized scene with the color all washed-out, right?
[14:24] <Arrlaari> The enforcer who’s prominent in the credits is the one who was demoted from inspector
01[14:24] <Froborr> Yes, same one.
01[14:24] <Froborr> I just have no idea what anyone’s name is, as usual.
[14:25] <Arrlaari> I think it’s reasonable to infer that the unsolved case that he “fell” pursuing was that white-haired guy
01[14:25] <Froborr> Yeah, seems pretty likely.
[14:25] <Arrlaari> Nakishima? I think the impersonator was calling him Nakishima
01[14:25] <Froborr> Nakishima or Makishima?
[14:26] <Arrlaari> Makishima, I just checked
[14:27] <Arrlaari> Kogami is the main enforcer / fallen inspector
01[14:29] <Froborr> *nods*
[14:32] <Arrlaari> Trying to remember the main Inspector’s name – Akane?
[14:32] <Sylocat> Yeah, it’s Akane

Episode 6

[14:36] <Sylocat> Dad just said, “Interesting camera angles in this show”
01[14:36] <Froborr> Ah, of course.
01[14:36] <Froborr> This is cyberpunk, therefore noir, therefore the ex-cop’s nemesis killed his partner.
[14:37] <Sylocat> Probably
01[14:38] <Froborr> Ah, so Glasses Inspector and Former Inspector were partners.
[14:38] <Arrlaari> Ginoza and Kogami
[14:39] <Sylocat> Twelfth Night!
[14:39] <Sylocat> I forgot this scene
[14:39] <Sylocat> Ah, something goes down at the school
[14:39] <Sylocat> She likes Titus Andronicus, huh?
[14:40] <Sylocat> “Especially cruel” is one way to describe Titus Andronicus
[14:41] <Sylocat> I spy CGI
[14:41] <Sylocat> This is one of the Enforcers, right?
[14:41] <Arrlaari> yes
[14:42] <Arrlaari> IIRC he’s been in the program from a relatively early age
01[14:42] <Froborr> Yeah, 5.
[14:42] <Arrlaari> Sasayama, the dead enforcer revealed in the first scene of this episode
01[14:42] <Froborr> Er, he was identified as a latent criminal at 5, they didn’t say when he became an Enforcer but implied he jumped at the first opportunity.
[14:43] <Sylocat> That’s a really good way to hide a body
[14:43] <Arrlaari> It’s been implied that the two enforcers Akane is speaking with now are in a sexual relationship, if you two have forgotten
[14:44] <Sylocat> Ah, I remembered at least one of them was implied to be gay
[14:44] <Arrlaari> Like, Yayane, the one who isn’t speaking much, was seen leaving the room just as Akane was going in, and the one who’s expositing was pulling her stockings on
[14:46] <Sylocat> That’s a fun new rationalization
[14:48] <Arrlaari> It’s my impression that clubs are a big deal currently in Japan, so for someone to drop that they’ve become rare in the future is probably meant to be a shock line
[14:49] <Sylocat> Good point
[14:50] <Sylocat> That’s a pickup line that would work on me
[14:51] <Sylocat> …So, this girl is the kinky type
01[14:51] <Froborr> Oh yeah, this guy.
[14:52] <Arrlaari> The culprit from the factory, was the designated bullying victim for too long and started revenge killing
[14:55] <Sylocat> Ouch…
[14:56] <Sylocat> She called him “-Sensei.” I’d forgotten that
[14:57] <Sylocat> Is this where we’d left off for all this time?
01[14:57] <Froborr> I guess?
[14:58] <Arrlaari> yeah, that was the last episode we saw before we left off
[14:58] <Sylocat> Wow
[14:59] <Arrlaari> Makishima’s hair was shorter than I remember from previous scenes
01[15:08] <Froborr> test
01[15:08] <Froborr> okay, just making sure.
[15:08] <Sylocat> Heh. You’re still connected
01[15:09] <Froborr> So, any comments on these eps?
[15:09] <Arrlaari> I remember the episodes but not our conversations regarding them were the first time we watched
[15:10] <Sylocat> I should go back and re-read the chats as I re-watch the episodes this week
[15:10] <Arrlaari> It’s evident that we’re leaving off in the middle of something – the audience has been shown the culprit and the first victim has just been discovered, the investigation hasn’t begun
[15:11] <Sylocat> Yeah… we had a couple culprit-of-the-week episodes but it’s developing pretty quick into an ongoing saga
[15:11] <Arrlaari> Oh, Froborr wasn’t here the first time we watched these episodes
01[15:11] <Froborr> Yeah, definitely. And what’s more, they’re tying in stuff going back to the third episode at least.
[15:20] <Arrlaari> So I’m looking at the chat from ep 1 & 2, and
[15:20] <Arrlaari> “[14:51] <Arrlaari> Well, I think of Shame culture vs. Guilt culture as a matter of degree [14:52] <Arrlaari> We’re not entirely shameless, here [14:52] <Arrlaari> Trump ain’t president yet”
01[15:21] <Froborr> Ah.
[15:22] <Sylocat> Ah yes…
[15:24] <Sylocat> I believe someone said, it would be just like Urobuchi to come up with a dystopia like this one and still think it’s better than what we have now.
[15:25] <Arrlaari> That was me
