01[13:52] <Froborr> Allo
[13:52] <@Sylocat> Hey
[13:53] <@Sylocat> Is it just us today?
03[13:53] * Sylocat sets mode: +o Froborr
01[13:54] <@Froborr> Looking probable.
[13:54] <@Sylocat> Alrighty then…
01[13:54] <@Froborr> Other people probably have significant others or somesuch nonsense
[13:54] <@Sylocat> True ’nuff
[13:54] <@Sylocat> I have a performance tonight, but call time isn’t ’til 4 PM my tim
[13:54] <@Sylocat> e
[13:55] <@Sylocat> (last week, as I mentioned in comments, was dress rehearsal, in which we started at 8:00 AM and still weren’t done by 2:30)
01[13:57] <@Froborr> Sounds about right for a rehearsal, from my vague memories of such things.
[13:58] <@Sylocat> You’d think I’d know better by now than to think six and a half hours would be enough time to dress rehearse a two-and-a-quarter-hour play
01[13:58] <@Froborr> Yeah. What play?
[13:59] <@Sylocat> “An Idle Conversation,” by George Bernard Shaw (it’s really called “In Good King Charles’ Golden Days,” but we trimmed out the short and pointless last scene)
[13:59] <@Sylocat> I’m playing King Charles II
[13:59] <@Sylocat> Oops… almost time
01[13:59] <@Froborr> Ah. Cool.
[13:59] <@Sylocat> (I’ll post some pictures in the comments tonight)
01[13:59] <@Froborr> Yep, ready when you are.
[13:59] <@Sylocat> Click
[14:00] <@Sylocat> I love that it’s a waltz, too
01[14:00] <@Froborr> Uh, episode 12, right?
[14:00] <@Sylocat> Yep
[14:00] <@Sylocat> Oops, forgot to change the chatroom topic
01[14:00] <@Froborr> …I mean, it’s in 3/4 time, but it’s a little FAST for a waltz, don’t you think?
[14:00] <@Sylocat> But yeah, it’s episode 12
01[14:01] <@Froborr> Just noticed that whatsisface, the evil brother, has a spade broach the same color and in the same position as Escaflowne’s energist. Cute.
[14:01] <@Sylocat> The rapid guitar beat makes it seem faster than the actual tempo is
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Ah, and here we meet Chid’s father, finally
[14:02] <@Sylocat> And he’s a stuck-up royal jerk…
01[14:02] <@Froborr> Well, Allen IS a ronin now. That’s a MAJOR crime in a feudal society.
[14:02] <@Sylocat> True
[14:03] <@Sylocat> Millerna is laying it on thick
01[14:03] <@Froborr> Yep.
[14:03] <@Sylocat> But she knows what works on her former brother-in-law
01[14:04] <@Froborr> Okay, so let me see if I’ve got the political situation correct:
[14:04] <@Sylocat> That worked
01[14:05] <@Froborr> Zaibach is picking off smaller realms near its borders, including Fanelia. Asturia has declared neutrality, but is allowing Zaibach’s forces access to their airspace to attack Freid. Allen is a knight of Asturia, and Millerna a princess; they’ve gone rogue to warn and aid Freid.
01[14:05] <@Froborr> WTF ARE THOSE DIMETRODONS!?
01[14:05] <@Froborr> And pterosaurs?
01[14:05] <@Froborr> What is UP with this freaky planet?
[14:05] <@Sylocat> And now Dornkirk knows about Hitomi, which can’t be good
01[14:05] <@Froborr> Yeah.
[14:05] <@Sylocat> Ooh, he remembers Earth… foreshadowing
01[14:05] <@Froborr> Dornkirk REMEMBERS Earth!?
[14:06] <@Sylocat> I’d forgotten they spoiled that this early on
[14:07] <@Sylocat> I love how Allen is only alive… twice over now… because Millerna ignored him when he said to stay out of the battle and let the men do the fighting
01[14:07] <@Froborr> Yep. And he still hasn’t noticed or learned from this.
[14:07] <@Sylocat> Ouch… Hitomi’s still upset over poor Zongi
[14:08] <@Sylocat> And of course, Merle’s being a jerk… but then, how is she supposed to know
01[14:08] <@Froborr> Shut up catgirl, whatever yoru name is. You suck and you’re being mean.
01[14:08] <@Froborr> Merle, that’s it.
[14:08] <@Sylocat> Ooh, Van wants a sword-measuring contest with Allen now
[14:08] <@Sylocat> And Allen’s men are egging him on
01[14:08] <@Froborr> lol, Allen’s “sword” has a few nicks on it, Van’s doesn’t, I GET THAT IMPLICATION
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Ouch… Hitomi’s putting her foot down now
01[14:10] <@Froborr> Hitomi’s really messed up about being psychically linked with someone as he died, and UNDERSTANDABLY SO
[14:10] <@Sylocat> So now Van will have to learn to apologize (something every shounen hero hates having to learn to do) before he loses their best trump card
01[14:11] <@Froborr> I wish we had more of what’s going on on Earth, but you know 50/50 chance between that resulting in something good like Fushigi Yuugi are completely horrible and laughably bizarre like Garzey’s Wing.
[14:11] <@Sylocat> The Duke actually looks somewhat dashing when he takes off that ridiculous headdress
01[14:11] <@Froborr> Wait, Milerna’s sister is named Marlena?
01[14:11] <@Froborr> That’s not confusing.
[14:11] <@Sylocat> Marlene, with an E on the end… I think
01[14:11] <@Froborr> Hey, I recognize that song!
[14:12] <@Sylocat> Ohhh yeah
[14:12] <@Sylocat> And it’s flashback time
[14:12] <@Sylocat> Ooh, Allen was already a knight back then…
01[14:12] <@Froborr> Oh, there’s like a decade age gap between Marlene and Milerna. That makes a bit more sense.
01[14:12] <@Froborr> I really like the little hammer-holding people on the music box.
01[14:12] <@Froborr> Oooh, SECRET DIARY
[14:12] <@Sylocat> Eeyup… and guess what secret Millerna’s about to learn
01[14:13] <@Froborr> I actually don’t have a clue.
01[14:13] <@Froborr> Wait.
[14:13] <@Sylocat> Ah, I forgot, it’s Chid who comes out to talk to her
01[14:13] <@Froborr> Wait, is Marlene the girl Allen’s all broken up over?
01[14:13] <@Froborr> I thought that was HIS sister?
[14:13] <@Sylocat> No… Allen’s missing sister is named Celena
01[14:13] <@Froborr> Okay.
[14:14] <@Sylocat> And he’s broken up over both of them
01[14:14] <@Froborr> Wait, so Allen and Marlene had a thing?
01[14:14] <@Froborr> THIS IS NOT AN EASY SHOW TO FOLLOW
[14:14] <@Sylocat> Yes, Allen and Marlene did indeed have a thing
[14:14] <@Sylocat> Aww, Hitomi’s giving a peptalk to herself when she thinks she’s giving one to Chid
01[14:15] <@Froborr> Oh hey, Hitomi’s teaching Chid about the power of positive thinking. Only, you know, how it ACTUALLY works, as a psychological phenomenon, instead of the BS woo it’s surrounded with in Western culture.
01[14:15] <@Froborr> Of course then she follows this up with a tarot reading, so…
[14:15] <@Sylocat> And here we go…
01[14:15] <@Froborr> Prodigies of the Sword is my new symphonic metal badn.
01[14:16] <@Froborr> So… he’s in the Kingsguard.
[14:16] <@Sylocat> How about “Knights of the Heavens”
01[14:16] <@Froborr> That’ll be our first single.
[14:16] <@Sylocat> Those tarot cards are gorgeous
01[14:16] <@Froborr> They really are.
01[14:16] <@Froborr> I bet they sold them.
[14:16] <@Sylocat> Ah, and Hitomi’s learning the secret at the same time…
[14:16] <@Sylocat> Yes, they did sell those, I think I still have my set
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Aaaaaaaand that’s the secret
01[14:17] <@Froborr> Shit, I was going to make a joke about Allen being Chid’s dad, I didn’t think they’d actually GO THERE.
[14:18] <@Sylocat> What a thing to learn on the eve of battle
01[14:18] <@Froborr> PS: While you’re soap opera-ing, there’s a giant fleet of awesome-looking air-castles en route.
01[14:18] <@Froborr> Seriously, I *love* that design, they are LITERAL flying fortresses.
[14:18] <@Sylocat> Ohhhh yeah… those floating fortresses are badass
[14:19] <@Sylocat> …What’s with the zeroes in these subtitles?
[14:19] <@Sylocat> That was weird
01[14:19] <@Froborr> I was going to say that that’s a lot more standard-bearers than you actually need for a force that size, but then they showed the rest of the army.
01[14:19] <@Froborr> My subtitles didn’t have a problem.
[14:19] <@Sylocat> Huh
[14:20] <@Sylocat> Van’s telling Merle to take care of Hitomi? She’s the last one you want to tell to take care of Hitomi
01[14:20] <@Froborr> Prediction: There’s going to be some kind of magical thing only true descendents of the royalty of Freid can use, and Chid either WILL or WILL NOT be able to use it, with Consequences.
01[14:20] <@Froborr> (Do not confirm or deny.)
01[14:21] <@Froborr> Oh FUCK the Duke overheard.
[14:21] <@Sylocat> Third plot reveal of the episode: Duke Freid already knew
01[14:22] <@Froborr> I like his attitude, though. Chid shouldn’t be blamed for what his mother may or may not have done, and Duke Freid has CLEARLY been his real dad no matter who his sperm donor was.
01[14:22] <@Froborr> Well, that was fun.
[14:22] <@Sylocat> A whole string of plot reveals… Dornkirk “remembers” Earth from long ago, Allen is Chid’s dad…
[14:23] <@Sylocat> And next episode, the massacre begins
01[14:23] <@Froborr> Yeah. And the interpersonal tensions serve to heighten the suspense of the approaching army.
[14:23] <@Sylocat> I like how they weave the personal and the political and the military concerns all together
01[14:24] <@Froborr> Yep. That’s the problem with hereditary leaders, those things DO get all tangled together.
01[14:24] <@Froborr> Any final thoughts before I post this?
[14:24] <@Sylocat> Not at the moment…
[14:24] <@Sylocat> I’ll post some pictures from tonight’s show in the comments
01[14:24] <@Froborr> Cool. ’twas fun! Good luck with your performance!
[14:24] <@Sylocat> You?
[14:24] <@Sylocat> Thanks

  1. As promised, here’s the pic:

Forgive the terrible quality, it was taken in a hurry right after the performance. There were even two cast members missing and I didn’t notice until just now.

(from left to right, the characters are: (back row): James (Duke of York, later King James II); George Fox; Sir Isaac Newton; Nell Gwynn; King Charles II (that’s me); Louise de Kérouaille.
(bottom row): Godfrey Kneller; Mrs. Basham (Newton’s beleaguered housekeeper).

Not pictured: Barbara Villiers, and Sally (Newton’s maid).
